Giacomo Puccini was the last great Italian opera composer. His music hasmoved audiences worldwide for more than a century. He was born in Tuscany in1858, began composing when he was 16 and graduated from Milan’s RoyalConservatory at age 25. In 1893, histhird opera, “Manon Lescaut,” made himrich and famous. During his 40-year career, Puccini wrote 12 operas, including“Tosca,” “Madama Butterfly” and “La Bohème.” His death in 1924 ended thegolden age of Italian opera.
