Addressing Disparaging Remarks About Italians

On June 28, 2023, 10:32 PM, Chicago Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez tweeted a poll asking "What's the best way to honor Italian heritage in Chicago?"

The options were:

A. Italian Ice Monument

B. Bialetti (espresso pot) Monument

C. Columbus Statue

D. Other (write in your own)

This is the Alderman’s backhanded way of disrespecting Chicago’s Italian American community. Her suggestion of a “monument to Italian Ice”, “loving a giardiniera or beef-juice fountain”, and a “cannoli statue” is beyond reproach, making a mockery of the present environment of ethnic sensitivity.

Below are letters addressing Chicago 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez regarding her insensitivity towards the Italian American Community. Such letters are written by JCCIA President Ron Onesti, National Italian American Foundation President Robert Allegrini, as well as a request for an apology from State Representative Anthony DeLuca.

With a new city council and mayor of Chicago in place, we believe it is time for all communities to come together with an air of mutual respect.

We suggest you inform other members of the Italian American community of this terrible situation and encourage one another to contact the Alderwoman personally to let her know of your sentiments.

She may be contacted at the four following email addresses:
